Google Lively - first test

image

After the announcement of Google’s 3D VR world Lively there has been a lot of talk in the blogosphere, with hundreds of reviews ranging from positive to negative. Time will tell.

I am mainly a Mac user and had to wait to be near to a PC to test Lively. It crashed the first PC I tried: despite being a browser-based (you need to download the Lively plugin first), Lively does require a good PC. I hope the Mac version comes soon. On the second PC I went in, reserved some of the user names I wanted, and visited the room in the image above first. This room has been done by Pathfinder Linden of Second Life fame. Too bad I could not attend the interesting event Second Life looks at Google Lively in Second Life.

First impressions: Lively is very fast and easy to learn, which is a very important point. Recent Web history shows that those who make things very easy to use win. The graphics is cartoonish. At this moment Lively is not suitable for marketing and educational events like Second Life. But this is Google. I do not worship Google but since I got my first Gmail account I never used other email systems. Google make fast and easy applications, and they have enough money to keep improving them.

I easily created the first Lively room of metafuturing and gave it a western look. In the image above, one of my Lively avatars explores the wild west of future VR worlds. This environment is a template - no user content creation yet. Wishlist: user generated content, voice, integration with Picasa, Youtube and Google Docs.
