Qwaq Forums as an advanced videoconferencing tool

After writing the last article on Qwaq Forums I participated in a very good meeting in QF (images below) with an agenda not related to QF itself. This is a demonstration of the power of the platform, and it is interesting to see how participants, even newcomers to QF, after a few minutes forget that they are in a “unusual” meeting environment and start focusing on the task at hand with the help of documents, spreadsheets and web browsing. I believe 2008 will be the takeoff year for this platform, which can be really proddictive (productive and addictive) once one “gets it” and becomes used to this new way of collaborating on the net.

Listen to this excellent audio interview with Julian Lombardi, the chairman of the board of directors of the Croquet Consortium (Open Croquet is the open source software platform on which Qwaq Forums is based). Lombardi talks of the advantages of the Open Croquet platforms, in particular the intrinsic scalability due to its distributed P2P nature, and the current plans to build a general purpose Croquet browser as an enabling technology for the 3D web.

Qwaq Forums are virtual Intranets for professional collaboration: those who are scared of the bad press of social VR worlds like Second Life should rest assured that here there is no gambling, porn, Ponzi scams and other things that may represent a risk for their businesslike image, but only features and tools oriented to professional collaboration. Yet, someone who has seen too much bad press can be scared of VR worlds (those places full of porn and too difficult to use anyway). Perhaps in these cases a QF environment should be described not as a VR world, but rather as an advanced videoconferencing tool.

A very interesting new experimental feature in Qwaq Forums, only available on MacOSX at this moment, is the possibility to paste a live webcam feed onto the face of an avatar. See the image above and this video demonstration. Once this feature is available to all users, it will really add to the potential of QF for professional collaboration and distance education in VR (V-Learning), by providing an experience perhaps less dreamiile and SL-like but certainly more realistic, businesslike and similar to a videoconference or interactive webinar.
